呢 (ne): The Five Jobs of Chinese's Most Versatile Particle

ne has no meaning of its own and no English equivalent — and it does five different jobs, all of them common. It is a sentence-final (sometimes mid-sentence) mood particle, unstressed, that Chinese speakers reach for dozens of times a day: to soften questions, to bounce a question back ("and you?"), to mark that something is going on right now, to add a touch of emphasis, and to hold a pause. Here are the five uses, from most essential to most stylistic.

Use 1: softening wh-questions

On questions with 谁 / 什么 / 哪里 / 怎么 and on A-not-A questions, 呢 adds politeness and warmth. The bare question is grammatical but can sound abrupt:

  • 你去哪里呢? nǎlǐ ne? (Where are you off to?)
  • 他怎么还不来呢? zěnme hái lái ne? (Why isn't he here yet?)
  • 到底对不对呢?Dàodǐ duì duì ne? (So is it right or not?)

Note the division of labor: marks yes-no questions; 呢 attaches to the other question types, where 吗 is forbidden.

Use 2: "And what about…?" — the bounce-back question

After a known topic, 呢 alone forms a complete follow-up question, with the verb omitted:

  • 我已经吃了,你呢? yǐjīng chī le, ne? (I've eaten — what about you?)
  • 他同意了,那你呢? tóngyì le, ne? (He's agreed — and you?)
  • 北京的天气很冷,上海呢?Běijīng de tiānqì hěn lěng, Shànghǎi ne? (Beijing is cold — how about Shanghai?)

It also asks where something went: 我的礼物呢? de lǐwù ne? (Where's my present?)

Use 3: something is going on right now

Sentence-final 呢 can mark an ongoing action or state, alone or together with or 正 / 正在:

  • 他睡觉呢。 shuìjiào ne. (He's sleeping.)
  • 外面正下雨呢。Wàimiàn zhèng xià ne. (It's raining out.)
  • 她正做着作业呢。 zhèng zuò zhe zuòyè ne. (She's in the middle of her homework.)

A practical reading: this 呢 says "the state is holding as we speak — adjust your plans accordingly" (我还忙着呢!— I'm busy here!).

Use 4: confirmation and mild exaggeration

呢 can close a statement with a tone of "really, I mean it", and in exclamations it stretches the degree:

  • 这件事可不容易呢。Zhè jiàn shì róngyì ne. (This is no easy thing, mind you.)
  • 这孩子真聪明呢。Zhè háizi zhēn cōngming ne. (This kid is really smart.)
  • 他的本事大着呢! de běnshi zhe ne! (His skills are greater than you'd think!)

Use 5: the mid-sentence pause

After a topic or subject, 呢 marks a small pause that frames what follows — like a spoken comma with attitude:

  • 这件事呢,说来话长。Zhè jiàn shì ne, shuō lái huà cháng. (As for this — it's a long story.)
  • 我呢,其实也不太清楚。 ne, qíshí tài qīngchu. (Me, I don't really know either.)
  • 钱呢,我是有一点,但不想给你。Qián ne, shì yǒu yīdiǎn, dàn xiǎng gěi . (Money — I do have a little, but I'm not giving you any.) — the pause sets up a contrast

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 呢 mean in Chinese?

By itself, nothing — 呢 is a mood particle. Its five jobs: softening wh- and A-not-A questions (你去哪里呢?), forming "and what about X?" questions (你呢?), marking ongoing situations (他睡觉呢), adding confirming or exaggerating emphasis (可不容易呢), and pausing after a topic (我呢,…).

What is the difference between 吗 and 呢?

吗 turns a statement into a yes-no question and is banned everywhere else. 呢 covers the rest: wh-questions, A-not-A questions, and elliptical follow-ups. 你吃饭了吗? asks "have you eaten?"; 你呢? asks "and you?"

What does 你呢 mean?

"What about you?" — a complete question built from a topic plus 呢, used to return a question just answered: 我已经吃了,你呢?

Does 呢 mark the present continuous?

It can. 他睡觉呢 means "he's sleeping (right now)", and 呢 frequently teams up with 正 / 正在 or verb-着: 外面正下雨呢. Chinese marks ongoing action several ways, and 呢 is the most colloquial of them.

Is 呢 ever required?

Rarely — most 呢-sentences survive without it, but they turn blunt or lose their nuance. The one place it is structurally essential is the elliptical question: 你呢? cannot lose its 呢.
