kěshì

1. correlative conjunction but; however (colloquial)

   她看起来很冷静，可是心里很着急。

   Tā kàn qǐlái hěn lěngjìng, kěshì xīnli hěn zháojí.

   She looks very calm, but inside she is very anxious.

2. verb emphatic form of the copula 是: indeed is; certainly is

   他可是我们班最聪明的学生。

   Tā kě shì wǒmen bān zuì cōngming de xuésheng.

   He IS the smartest student in our class.
