就 (jiù): The Adverb of "Early, Easy, Immediate — and Insistent"
就 jiù may be the most information-dense adverb in Chinese. Its core meaning is "early, quick, easy, low-threshold, limited in scope" — and, on top of the facts, it carries the speaker's attitude of firm assertion. That one core explains uses that look wildly different in English: "already at eight", "as soon as", "then", "only", and the defiant "I just won't". Its mirror twin is 才 ("late, hard, high-threshold"), and mastering the pair is a rite of passage in Chinese grammar.
The eight uses of 就
1. Earlier than expected
- 他八点就到了。Tā bā diǎn jiù dào le. (He was there by eight — early.)
- 这孩子三岁就会读书。Zhè háizi sān suì jiù huì dú shū. (This child could read at three.) — 就 flags "sooner than the norm"
2. The condition is low — one thing suffices
Condition met → result follows, no obstacles:
- 你去我就去。Nǐ qù wǒ jiù qù. (If you go, I'll go.)
- 只要你愿意努力就能成功。Zhǐyào nǐ yuànyì nǔlì jiù néng chénggōng. (As long as you're willing to work, you'll succeed.)
- 一按按钮机器就启动。Yī àn ànniǔ jīqì jiù qǐdòng. (Press the button and the machine starts.)
3. No gap — "as soon as"
The pattern 一 A 就 B ("the moment A happens, B happens") is built on this use:
- 他一到就开始工作。Tā yī dào jiù kāishǐ gōngzuò. (He starts working the moment he arrives.)
- 一见到你就喜欢上你。Yī jiàn dào nǐ jiù xǐhuan shàng nǐ. (I liked you the moment I saw you.)
4. About to happen
- 他就来了。Tā jiù lái le. (He'll be here any moment.)
- 我们就出发了。Wǒmen jiù chūfā le. (We're leaving right away.)
5. "Then" — the natural next step
就 links two events where the second follows reasonably from the first:
- 既然来了,就请坐吧。Jìrán lái le, jiù qǐng zuò ba. (Since you're here, do sit down.)
- 我看价格不贵,就买了。Wǒ kàn jiàgé bù guì, jiù mǎi le. (I saw the price was fine, so I bought it.)
6. "Only" — shrinking quantity or scope
- 就他一个人知道。Jiù tā yī gè rén zhīdào. (Only he knows.)
- 我就买了一本。Wǒ jiù mǎi le yī běn. (I bought just one.)
- 我们就三个人。Wǒmen jiù sān gè rén. (There are only three of us.)
7. Downplaying a request
就 shrinks the imposition, promising "this won't cost you much":
- 我说两句就走。Wǒ shuō liǎng jù jiù zǒu. (Two words and I'm gone.)
- 我看看就好。Wǒ kànkan jiù hǎo. (I'll just have a look, that's all.)
8. Insistence — the stubborn 就
With stress on 就, the speaker digs in against pressure:
- 我就不信。Wǒ jiù bù xìn. (I simply refuse to believe it.)
- 我就要去。Wǒ jiù yào qù. (I'm going, whatever you say.)
- 他就是不听我的。Tā jiùshì bù tīng wǒ de. (He just won't listen to me.)
就 vs 才: the great opposition
| Dimension | 就 says | 才 says |
|---|---|---|
| time | early: 他八点就来了 (came by eight — early) | late: 他八点才来 (didn't come until eight) |
| condition | easy: 一学就会 (learn it at one try) | hard: 学了很久才会 (took ages to learn) |
| quantity | merely: 就三块钱 (just three yuan — no big deal) | too little: 才三块钱 (a measly three yuan) |
| attitude | insists, positively or negatively: 我就不去 / 我就要去 | rejects only: 我才不去呢 (as if I'd go!) |
On quantity the two agree that the amount is small — but 才 adds a note of complaint, while 就 shrugs it off. The full portrait of the twin is in the article on 才, and the dictionary entries for both are at 就 and 才.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 就 mean in Chinese?
Its core is "early / quick / easy / limited": earlier than expected (八点就到了), as soon as (一到就开始), then / in that case (既然来了就坐吧), only (就他一个人), and — with stress — stubborn insistence (我就不信). One core meaning, many English translations.
What is the 一…就… pattern?
"As soon as A, B": 一 marks the trigger action, 就 the immediate result — 他一到就开始工作 (he starts working the moment he arrives). No conjunction is needed.
What is the difference between 就 and 才?
They are mirror images. 就 marks early / easy / immediate (他八点就来了 — early); 才 marks late / difficult / hard-won (他八点才来 — finally, late). With quantities, 就 downplays ("just three yuan") while 才 complains ("only a measly three yuan").
What does 我就不去 mean?
"I'm not going, period." Stressed 就 expresses a defiant stand that resists persuasion. The positive counterpart also exists: 我就要去 — "I insist on going."
Does 就 mean "then"?
Often, yes: it links a premise to its natural consequence — 我看价格不贵,就买了 (I saw it was cheap, so I bought it). Unlike English "then", 就 always sits right before the verb, never at the start of the clause alone.
