所(suǒ) — meaning, uses and examples

1. structural particle 所 + verb forms a nominal (what is seen/heard/loved)

   你才是他的所爱。

   Nǐ cái shì tā de suǒ'ài.

   You are the one he truly loves.

2. noun place; premises

   这里是他的住所。

   Zhèlǐ shì tā de zhùsuǒ.

   This is his residence.

3. suffix specialized institution (institute, clinic, police station)

   他在一家研究所工作。

   Tā zài yī jiā yánjiūsuǒ gōngzuò.

   He works at a research institute.

4. measure word measure word for schools, hospitals, houses

   村里新建了一所小学。

   Cūn lǐ xīn jiàn le yī suǒ xiǎoxué.

   A new primary school has been built in the village.

5. particle used with 被 or 为 in passive constructions (为…所…)

   他被大家的真诚所打动了。

   Tā bèi dàjiā de zhēnchéng suǒ dǎdòng le.

   He was moved by everyone's sincerity.
