偏

piān

1. adverb deliberately; contrary to expectations

   让他别去，他偏去。

   Ràng tā bié qù, tā piān qù.

   He was told not to go, but he went anyway.

2. adjective slanted; not straight

   这幅画挂偏了。

   Zhè fú huà guà piān le.

   The painting is hung askew.

3. adjective partial; biased

   妈妈有点偏心弟弟。

   Māma yǒudiǎn piānxīn dìdi.

   Mom favors my younger brother a bit.

4. adjective remote; out-of-the-way

   他们住在城里一个很偏的地方。

   Tāmen zhù zài chénglǐ yī gè hěn piān de dìfang.

   They live in a very remote part of the city.

5. adverb as luck would have it; inopportunely

   我找他有事，他偏不在。

   Wǒ zhǎo tā yǒu shì, tā piān bù zài.

   I went to see him about something, but unluckily he wasn't in.
