1. correlative conjunction but

   他努力了，但没有成功。

   Tā nǔlì le, dàn méiyǒu chénggōng.

   He tried hard, but did not succeed.

2. adverb only; merely (written; as in 但愿)

   但愿一切顺利。

   Dànyuàn yīqiè shùnlì.

   May everything go smoothly.
