1. preposition for; for the benefit of (introduces the beneficiary)

   我为大家唱一首歌。

   Wǒ wèi dàjiā chàng yī shǒu gē.

   Let me sing a song for everyone.

2. preposition because of; over (written)

   他为这件事操了不少心。

   Tā wèi zhè jiàn shì cāo le bùshǎo xīn.

   He worried a great deal over this matter.

为wéi

1. verb to be; to become (written)

   一公里为一千米。

   Yī gōnglǐ wéi yīqiān mǐ.

   One kilometer is one thousand meters.

2. preposition by (part of the written passive pattern 为…所…)

   他为大家所敬重。

   Tā wéi dàjiā suǒ jìngzhòng.

   He is respected by everyone.
