Mandarin Tone Trainer — Practice Tones With Feedback That Hears You

ChinesePath includes a Mandarin tone trainer built on two things most tone apps lack: a personal voice calibration that learns your pitch range before judging you, and per-syllable tone feedback on real course exercises — so you always know which tone failed and in which direction.

Step 1: Calibrate to your voice

Everyone's pitch range is different — a deep voice's "high and flat" sits far below a high voice's. The trainer starts with a short calibration course: you record a set of syllables, and the system builds a baseline from your voice. All tone judgments afterwards are measured against that baseline. You can recalibrate any time.

Step 2: Drill tones as contrasts

The course trains tones the way that actually works — as contrasts: the same syllable in all four tones (mā má mǎ mà — 妈 麻 马 骂), minimal pairs that learners confuse most (2nd vs 3rd, 1st vs 4th), and tone-pair words. Each recording gets tone-level feedback. If your third tone reads as a second tone, it tells you so — the fix is usually to stop forcing the final rise and stay low.

Step 3: Your errors come back until they stick

Every failed item enters an error-review queue on a spaced schedule — re-tested after 1, 3, 7 and 21 days, resetting whenever you miss it again. You do not re-drill what you already produce well; the trainer spends your time on the handful of tones you actually get wrong.

What about tone changes?

Real Mandarin changes tones in context — 你好 is pronounced ní hǎo, 不去 is bú qù. The course teaches the third tone sandhi and the 一/不 rules explicitly, and practices them in words and sentences, not just isolated syllables.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the trainer calibrate before scoring?

Because tone identity lives in relative pitch movement, not absolute pitch. Judging a deep voice against a generic model produces false errors; calibration measures you against your own range.

Can it tell me which tone I produced?

Yes — feedback is per syllable and tone-specific, so you learn not just that a tone was off, but what it sounded like instead.

Is this a separate app?

No — it is built into the ChinesePath pronunciation course and runs in the browser. The first unit, including recording and feedback, is free.

How long until my tones improve?

With contrast drills plus feedback, most learners stabilize isolated tones within weeks; fluent-speech tones take word- and sentence-level practice over months. The review schedule automates the follow-up.
