  1. adverb all; in every case

    大家都来了。

    Dàjiā dōu lái le.

    Everyone has come.

  2. adverb echoes question words or 连 in emphatic patterns: without exception; even

    他什么都吃。

    Tā shénme dōu chī.

    He eats anything.

  3. adverb already (with exaggerated or urging tone, often with sentence-final 了)

    都十二点了,你还不睡?

    Dōu shí'èr diǎn le, nǐ hái bù shuì?

    It is already twelve — why are you still up?

  1. noun capital; big city

    北京是中国的首都。

    Běijīng shì Zhōngguó de shǒudū.

    Beijing is the capital of China.
