ràng

  1. verb to yield; to give way (让座, 让路)

    他在公交车上给老人让座。

    Tā zài gōngjiāochē shàng gěi lǎorén ràngzuò.

    He gave up his seat to an elderly person on the bus.

  2. verb to invite; to urge (someone to eat, drink, come in)

    他热情地让大家吃水果。

    Tā rèqíng de ràng dàjiā chī shuǐguǒ.

    He warmly invited everyone to eat some fruit.

  3. verb causative: to let, to make, to tell (V1 of a pivot construction)

    妈妈让我早点回家。

    Māma ràng wǒ zǎodiǎn huí jiā.

    Mom told me to come home early.

  4. preposition colloquial passive marker, like 被 (almost always adversative)

    蛋糕让弟弟吃光了。

    Dàngāo ràng dìdi chīguāng le.

    The cake was polished off by my little brother.
