jì

1. verb to continue; to succeed

   他继承了父亲的事业。

   Tā jìchéng le fùqīn de shìyè.

   He carried on his father's business.

2. adverb then; subsequently (literary)

   先是一阵掌声，继而是欢呼声。

   Xiān shì yī zhèn zhǎngshēng, jì'ér shì huānhūshēng.

   First came applause, then cheers.
