sǐ

1. verb to die

   院子里的老树死了。

   Yuànzi lǐ de lǎo shù sǐ le.

   The old tree in the yard died.

2. adjective rigid; inflexible

   学习不能死记硬背。

   Xuéxí bù néng sǐjì-yìngbèi.

   Learning shouldn't be pure rote memorization.

3. adverb extremely; to death (colloquial)

   今天累死了。

   Jīntiān lèisǐ le.

   I'm dead tired today.
