把(bǎ / bà) — meaning, uses and examples

把bǎ

1. preposition preposition of the 把-construction: fronts a definite object for active disposal

   他把西瓜吃了。

   Tā bǎ xīguā chī le.

   He ate the watermelon up.

2. measure word measure word for things with a handle

   我买了一把伞。

   Wǒ mǎi le yī bǎ sǎn.

   I bought an umbrella.

3. verb to hold; to grip

   上楼时请把住扶手。

   Shàng lóu shí qǐng bǎ zhù fúshǒu.

   Please hold the handrail when going upstairs.

4. verb to guard; to control (把守, 把关)

   Yǒu shìbīng bǎshǒu zhe chéngmén.

   Soldiers guard the city gate.

   这个刀把儿是木头做的。

   Zhège dāobàr shì mùtou zuò de.

   This knife handle is made of wood.
