1. verb to be stunned; to stare blankly

   听到这个消息，他愣了半天。

   Tīngdào zhège xiāoxi, tā lèng le bàntiān.

   He was stunned for a long moment at the news.

2. adverb stubbornly; simply (colloquial)

   这么简单的话他愣是没听懂。

   Zhème jiǎndān de huà tā lèngshì méi tīngdǒng.

   Simple as it was, he just couldn't get it.
