xiàng

  1. preposition toward; to (facing direction or target of an action; can take a personal object)

    她向老师请教。

    Tā xiàng lǎoshī qǐngjiào.

    She asks the teacher for advice.

  2. verb to side with; to favor (colloquial)

    妈妈总是向着弟弟。

    Māma zǒngshì xiàng zhe dìdi.

    Mom always takes my little brother's side.
