jiào

  1. verb to call out; to shout; (of animals) to cry, to bark

    外面有人叫你。

    Wàimiàn yǒu rén jiào nǐ.

    Someone outside is calling you.

  2. verb to be called; to be named

    我叫小明。

    Wǒ jiào Xiǎomíng.

    My name is Xiaoming.

  3. verb causative verb: to tell, to ask, to order (V1 of a pivot construction)

    她叫他别担心了。

    Tā jiào tā bié dānxīn le.

    She told him not to worry.

  4. preposition colloquial passive marker, like 被

    我的伞叫人借走了。

    Wǒ de sǎn jiào rén jiè zǒu le.

    My umbrella got borrowed by someone.

  5. verb to order (food, a ride); to summon a service

    我们中午叫外卖吧。

    Wǒmen zhōngwǔ jiào wàimài ba.

    Let's order takeout for lunch.
