到底

dàodǐ

1. adverb on earth; exactly (pressing a question)

   你到底去不去？

   Nǐ dàodǐ qù bu qù?

   Are you going or not, after all?

2. adverb after all; in the final analysis

   他到底是孩子，不懂这些。

   Tā dàodǐ shì háizi, bù dǒng zhèxiē.

   He is a child after all and does not understand these things.

3. adverb finally; in the end (after twists and turns)

   新方法到底试验成功了。

   Xīn fāngfǎ dàodǐ shìyàn chénggōng le.

   The new method finally proved successful.
