之(zhī) — meaning, uses and examples

1. pronoun him; her; it; them (object pronoun referring to something previously mentioned, literary)

   这样的好机会，求之不得。

   Zhèyàng de hǎo jīhuì, qiú zhī bù dé.

   Such a good opportunity is more than one could wish for.

2. structural particle of ('s) (equivalent to 的, linking modifier and head; literary)

   全班三分之一的同学都参加了比赛。

   Quán bān sān fēn zhī yī de tóngxué dōu cānjiā le bǐsài.

   A third of the class took part in the competition.

3. verb to go to; to head for (classical)

   君将何之？

   Jūn jiāng hé zhī?
