wàn

  1. numeral ten thousand (the pivotal unit of Chinese numeration)

    这座城市有八十万人。

    Zhè zuò chéngshì yǒu bāshí wàn rén.

    This city has eight hundred thousand people.

  2. adverb absolutely (in negatives, as in 万万不能)

    这件事万万不能大意。

    Zhè jiàn shì wànwàn bù néng dàyi.

    You absolutely must not be careless about this.

  3. numeral a great many (as in 千山万水)

    他们走过千山万水才到达目的地。

    Tāmen zǒu guò qiān shān wàn shuǐ cái dàodá mùdìdì.

    They crossed countless mountains and rivers to reach their destination.
